About the Roussillon area

Roussillon is a typical charming village from Provence, which is ranked among the most beautiful French villages. Surrounded by amazing landscapes, the village of Roussillon is really worth a visit.

Located in the biggest deposit of ochre in the world, Roussillon is well known for its marvellous cliffs and its impressive ochre quarry. Red, yellow and brown colours are spread in layers which contrast beautifully with the green pine trees and the blue lavenders.

Added to that, the deep blue sky of Provence highlights this wonderful picture. This magical site resembles a painter palette. No wonder that so many artists are seeking inspiration here. Jean Cocteau, Carzou, Buffet, Ambriogiani and many more have been well known to visit regularly the region.

During your sightseeing, it is really likely that you will encounter art galleries and exhibitions where you can meet local artists, admire and buy paintings. From Roussillon village, a walking path is going through the ochre to take a closer look at this astonishing scenery.

There is also a museum in an old ochre factory, where you can learn about the use of the pigments.

Finally, do not forget to taste the wonderful cuisine and visit some of the gastronomic restaurants held by well known chefs. There is a lot to discover in your plate as well!
